Solo exhibit at Upscale Galerie
23 March 2025
Sometimes we hold things together
These papers were mountains
These embers were ashes
Sometimes we hold things together
If dancing is power
Dancing is mourning
Dancing is outrage
Dancing is soaring
For my solo exhibition in Upscale Gallery, I created a site specific performance and video installation in collaboration with discarded drawings, seedlings and wind.
Dates: 5th April - 22nd April
Opening: 5th April 2025
Exhibition text
Marijke de Pous is a visual artist based in Rotterdam with a background in philosophy. Her works often are a cocktail of drawing, performance, dance and photography. She likes to work with the body as a way to evoke presence and connection. Amidst mountains, fields and in her studio, she dances with landscape and materials to explore our emotional and physical ties to the earth and to each other.
Her choice of materials, including charcoal, clay and pastels, naturally creates a connection with nature, her movements simulate natural forces. By regularly inserting herself in her work, the relationship between nature and human is literally depicted. This creates a certain rawness in her work that is paired with the vulnerability or otherwise malleability of humans. Marijke de Pous is the missing piece of the puzzle that completes her work.”
